uncomplicated marketing training
Practical online courses for small business owners and the people who support them
The problem I kept seeing
After more than ten years of building websites and helping small businesses figure out how to market themselves, I’ve noticed the same thing happen over and over again.
We launch a website. I explain how much more they’ll get out of their investment if they drive traffic to it through social media and email marketing. They listen, they’re keen, they mean to do something about it — and then real life and running a business gets in the way.
I can build a great website. What I can’t do is magic away the reality that a busy business owner has approximately one hundred things to do before they sit down to write a Facebook post.
But the problem goes deeper than that
Many of the businesses I work with are local. Hills businesses, mostly. And Hills businesses operate differently from businesses in the suburbs. The community connections are already there. The relationships already exist. Good local marketing builds on that warmth — it doesn’t replace it with something that sounds like it was written by an algorithm.
That takes someone who understands the area, the people, and the tone that local communities actually respond to. It’s not a skill you can outsource to a city agency. It’s something a local person does naturally, because they’re part of the same community.
The other side of the coin
In that same community sits a group of people I know equally well — parents, career-changers, and capable people of all kinds who want flexible work that fits around school hours, family commitments, and a Hills lifestyle. The kind of work that doesn’t require a long commute to a large employer. The kind of work you can do from home, on your own terms.
For most of them, the idea of working for themselves feels like an appealing but slightly terrifying unknown. What do you charge? How do you find clients? What does it actually look like, day to day? Those questions stop a lot of capable people before they’ve properly begun.
What I realised
The businesses need local people. The local people need flexible work. Digital work crosses geography in a way that almost nothing else does — and a local VA brings something extra that no remote worker can: they can actually show up. Drop in, take a few photos, have a conversation about what’s coming up next month. That’s not just practical, it’s the Hills way of doing things.
I built Uncomplicated Marketing Training to bring these two groups together — and to make the freelancing side of things as straightforward as the marketing side.
Bringing both groups together
The courses here are practical, jargon-free, and built around real small business needs. They’ll teach you the marketing skills. But they’ll also walk you through what it actually takes to work for yourself — the parts that feel unknown, and the parts that usually stop people before they start.
Marketing is where I’ve started. But the thinking behind this is bigger than that. If you’re good at something a local business needs, and you want flexible work that fits your life — there’s a path here for you.
